I’m a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, and formerly a contributing writer to The Atlantic. I also write essays, features, and reviews for n+1, the London Review of Books, Harper’s Magazine, The Guardian, The Believer, and others. My first book, Thin Places, was one of NPR’s “best books of 2020.”

In 2020, I wrote this column for The Paris Review Daily. This essay was a finalist for a 2019 National Magazine Award for feature writing. This one received a 2016 Pushcart Prize. This one was selected for publication in Best American Essays 2016. I’ve been awarded fellowships and residencies from PioneerWorks, Hedgebrook, the Millay Colony for the Arts, Art OMI, the Black Mountain Institute, and others.

My personal favorite honor is that once Heavyweight made an episode about something eerie that happened when I mailed a book to my friend Amy.

Other hats: creator of Thresholds podcast for LitHub, writer of an irregular letter, assistant professor of creative writing at Bowdoin College.

My agent is Claudia Ballard at WME: cballard@wmeagency.com. If you’d like to reach me directly, you can get in touch via that nice button below.
